Hey everyone!
Today I’m bringing you a SUPER simple DIY project you can accomplish in only a few days! When we first moved into our new home, we brought with us some cheap Ikea furniture that didn’t really match the design I was going for. We started with a black coffee table from Ikea (purchased for $40 I believe), and we turned it into a cream and brown beautiful centerpiece to our room! Here is how we did it! Enjoy this DIY coffee table tutorial!
Materials you will need:
Ikea coffee table (or any coffee table really)
Wood planks from Home Depot
Wood glue
Stain and sealant of your choice
Spray paint of your choice (optional)

Our first task was to prime and spray paint the coffee table a cream color (from black). I’m a big fan of spray paint because the coverage is great and it’s fast! We used Killz spray paint primer first and then a cream color spray paint we picked up from Home Depot. Be sure to spray from a good distance away from the table, or else you will get drips like we did (whoops!).

Next we went in and created a nice wood table top. We measured the top of the Ikea table top and figured out how much overhang we wanted from the wood. From these calculations we figured out how many planks we needed to go across the table and we had them cut for us at Home Depot. Next step is to glue the planks in place on top with wood glue, and let it set for 24 hours with heavy objects on top.
After the wood was glued down, we sanded it and get ready to stain! We choose a dark espresso stain that turned out BEAUTIFUL when finished! We conditioned the wood, stained it with 2 coats, and then sealed it with a clear seal. It was super easy and didn’t take much time! Just go slowly and make sure to correct any drips!
Note: when my husband was sanding, he didn’t realize he needed to go with the grain, which resulted in these spiral scratches on the wood…whoops! After it was stained though, you couldn’t really see them though! Just make sure to sand and stain WITH the grain of the wood!
After everything was sealed and dry, our table was finished! I am in love with the finished results, and it has held up as our kids play on and around it! This was such a simple upgrade and it helped make the room feel light and bright! We love it!
